When is the best time to put hummingbird feeders out in Illinois. Where do they nest.?

You can keep track of their northward-migration here:

It’s fun to see them get closer to your area. I would put out the feeders when you start seeing sightings within 100 miles or so of your location.

In your area, probably as soon as the weather turns warm and there are no more freezes. I’m in the South and we sometimes leave our feeders out year round. A few birds will come even in colder weather. The hummers nest in trees and bushes, just like other birds. A tip, don’t buy expensive feed (sugar water) from the store. Make your own. Use a pitcher of tap water with as much sugar added as the water will absorb. You can add red food color if you like, but it is not necessary. The birds will come anyway. Don’t use fruit juices as some are not good for the hummers. There is a lot of info on the Internet. Good luck.

Put feeders out in mid April….. Hummers like nesting in pine trees. Nests are about the diameter of a quarter and are easily missed by the untrained eye. Wonderful to watch if you can find!
Also try planting flowers that attract them….I have penstemon, butterfly bushes and butterfly flowers, agastache, hostas (when blooming), and a vine called ‘cardinal flower’. The flowers, along with several feeders should attract them to your yard.
The correct ratio for home-made food is 3 parts water to 1 part sugar. This is important for the birds. Don’t add the food coloring – unnecessary.

In mid April! They will nest in the shadiest wooded area near your feeder. If your porch has an awning built of wood they will find a corner in the awning to nest, otherwise it will be the nearest tree.
