Are larger birds a threat to a hummingbird nest?

31 December, 2009 (21:08) | hummingbird nest | By: admin

I’ve been keeping tabs on a hummingbird nest with two eggs in my rosebush. One hatched since yesterday, and the mama (or dad? I don’t know..) seems to be following around a large sparrow instead of tending the baby. Is it a threat? Today there seem to be more birds (sparrows and doves) in my yard than usual. Are these birds a threat to the nest? Is there anything I can do to protect the nest and the hatchling?
Thank you both for your help. Especially the warning about the crows. Mama is back on the nest for the night and all is well.

If the hummingbirds are watching the sparrows, then they are being good parents. No doubt. Worry if you see blue-jays or crows. They are nest robbers.

nutting. being in a rosebush is already protection. and the parents will keep an eye on intruders with those sharp long beaks
