What is hummingbird liquid/ food made out of?

I originally thought it was made out of sugar and water. I am just wondering because it would be cheaper if I could make hummingbird food myself than spend money at the store. Oh and another question…what are some good wild bird recipes? Like those peanutbutter balls ?

Yes, it is just sugar water. You can make your own: http://www.birdwatching-bliss.com/hummingbird-food-recipe.html
Many birdies love peanut butter! They also like things made with suet–you can buy those suet cakes at the store for a couple dollars. Another thing you can make is coat some stale bread with peanut butter and cover it with wild bird seed. Make sure the squirrels don’t take off with it, tho…

I love hummingbirds, and all you need is some sugarwater (the same sweetness as really sweet tea. Just add a couple drops of red food coloring, because they are highly attracted to that color.

When it comes to wild bird food, just stick with all natural grains. Don’t buy expensive little bags of food. Go to MFA or a farm and home center and buy big bags of fancy scratch grains for about the same price. It will last you a long time. I always scatter some in the feeders, and then all around my driveway so I can watch them from the windows, or when I’m outside 🙂

2nd answer: I just thought I would note that we have even more birds this year that are flocking around our feeders:) There is a few I’ve never seen before (going to have to get a book to identify them). We also have the hummingbirds back again, and some of them are really small, about the size of a thumb. . . I have heard they come back to their same homes every year up north, so maybe they are ones that were born here last year 🙂 Very cool!!!

It is 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. Bring to a boil and let it cool to room temp.
This is much healthier than the store bought stuff and you will find the birds like it better.
Do an experiment… make your own and store bought side by side. See which one the like the best.
I make mine for that reason.
