How do I keep ants out of hummingbird feeders?

I have tried filling the little “moat” at the top with water, chalk, vinegar, etc. The wind either blows it away, or the rain washes it away. I love my hummingbirds, but I’m getting really tired of all the ants in the feeders. I hang the feeders from Shepherd’s hooks, that’s my only option. Appreciate any tried-and-true suggestions. Hold any wise-cracks, please.

The adds on the right side of this page have several items that will keep ants out of your feeder. My favorite is the ant moat.

Try putting oil on the shepherd’s hooks where they are crawling up to the feeder.

Maybe get some double sided tape and stick some ant baits in the area where you hand the feeder. Hummingbirds are way cool. Good luck.

I really don’t think it is possible. I have my feeders hanging on thin wire hooks from my gutters, and the ants still get to the food.

This isn’t a green answer, but you could use pesticide granules around the base of the shepherd’s hook. This will kill ants and prevent their return. Or just ignore the ants as much as you possibly can.
