What is the best way to attract hummingbirds?

And have them come back year after year? Last year I saw at least 2 males and 2 females. And this year, taking into account the amount of nectar that’s being consumed, I think that there is only the one female, which I’ve seen. I’m not sure if this is just how it is year to year or if there is a way I can keep them coming back consistantly every year.

I live in southwestern PA and always put out nectar. Last year I got out a few annuals (petunias) but those were quickly eaten by bunnies before I could save them. I do have a few perennials but not many and those I do have, I don’t think the hummers like them.

Also, is there a way to make sure that they have a good nesting site to attract them?

1 part granulated sugar
to 4 parts water.

Example: 1/4 cup of sugar
to 1 cup water

Be sure to let it cool before pouring
into hummingbird feeder.

hang a feeder but make sure you add a couple of drops of red food coloring to it. They’re attracted to red.

"A mother hummingbird often lines her nest with the down from plants and silk from spider webs. She is likely to build her nest near a good source of cushiony material."

"Hummingbirds make their nests in the fork of the branches on a tree. They don’t like a lot of wind and their nests can’t be open to a downpour, so proper placement of your hummingbirds new house is also important."

Your second answer came from this website

but that person, who shall not be named, chose not to give it credit. ALSO, it is misquoted….it’s supposed to say "Boil 1part granulated sugar…"

Use 1 part sugar to 4 parts water, boil the water first. My feeder is the right size for 1/4 cup sugar to one cup of water. Be consistent about where you hang the feeder and change the mixture every three days otherwise it will sour and they won’t feed. Do not use food coloring in the feeder. It is bad for the birds. My glass feeder is bright blue and they have no problem returning year after year. The males are territorial and will chase off any other males should they try to use the feeder. Bright flowers are a great addition to attract the birds as well.
