Can anyone tell me how to keep honey bees away from my hummingbird feeders? We’ve tried everything we know.
I have two solutions.
1. I place Vaseline in the hole of the feeder. This allows the bird to get the water but keeps the bee out. This can be a pain if it rains alot or if you don’t clean the feeder regularly.
2. This year I placed an alternate feeder with limited water in it for the bees. It was a junk feeder without the perches and it seems to have attracted the bees. I feed them just enough to keep them interested in this feeder and it seems to kee them away form my prime feeders.
What is the correct ratio of sugar and water for making home made hummingbird food?

3:1 or 4:1?
sugar:water, that is.
1 part sugar to 4 parts water. In other words 1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup water. Bring to boil and let cool. Refrigerate any leftovers after filling feeders.
Can you use store bought nectar to attract hummingbirds in any state, say, Ohio?
March 3rd, 2010If you live in the midwest, can you attract hummingbirds to your front porch in any neighborhood? I live in the city, but there are a lot of trees. I saw this cool red nectar in a department store, do I have to live in a certain neighborhood to get these unique birds to my porch? How will they know to show up? Can they smell it from miles away like sharks to human blood? Can they get signals from other birds. Has anyone ever attracted hummingbirds to their porch, and what state do you live in?
The hummingbirds are attracted to the area by the flowers there, not the hummingbird feeders. If you live in the city, I doubt if you can get them around a feeder. If you have any flowers around, just mix sugar 1part to 4 parts of water and heat to almost boiling to keep it from spoiling, let cool and put in a feeder and hang out of direct sunlight around some trees or flowers, they will find it. the storebought nectar doesn’t do anything except cost a lot., I live in NE Texas on a lake…..Nuf Said

Here is one minute of time spent standing by my in-law’s hummingbird feeder in Payson, Arizona. I am about one foot from the feeder. So far we have identified Broad-Tailed Hummingbirds, Broad-billed Hummingbirds, Black-Chinned Hummingbirds, and Rufous Hummingbirds.

February 28th, 2010It’s on a very low branch, so I can also see that there are eggs in it. Unfortunately, being the naughty 3 year old that he is, my son threw a ball up toward the nest. It didn’t injure the bird or harm the nest. But, the the bird left the nest & has not come back. (This was much earlier today) It’s now almost 10 pm my time. If the hummingbird doesn’t come back what should I do?
It will probably come back tomorrow. He probably just scared her off. Hummingbird babies are so cute! We had a nest last year and it was incredible to see the babies get way to big for their tiny next and then one day they were gone! Keeping my fingers crossed for your hummingbird to return! If she doesn’t come back the eggs will probably not incubate properly and they wont even hatch.
Hummingbird feeders?
February 28th, 2010Which is better for attracting hummingbirds…the type that allows them to feed out of the bottom or the type where they feed from a small hole and have a place to rest?
If you buy the ones where they can rest, you can view them better. You can see the colors of their wings. We used to put our fingers over the plastic perches and they would land on our fingers.
I don’t really think there is a better way in terms of health of the bird. Mostly, it is just viewing preferences.
(Remember not to add food coloring to the syrup, though. The design of the feeder is attractive to the birds enough!)
