Antillean Mango Hummingbird
(Anthracothorax dominicus)
The
Antillean Mango
Hummingbird is found in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the
British and U.S. Virgin Islands.
It lives mostly in the subtropical or
tropical dry forests and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
The Antillean Mango hummingbird was once
quite abundant in the Virgin Islands but now may only remain on St.
Thomas and some of the British Virgin Islands. It is still common in the
coastal plain of Puerto Rico.
It is thought that the Antillean Mango hummingbird
is declining in numbers due to the Green-Throated Carib hummingbird which
competes with it and has expanded its range into areas once inhabited by the
Antillean Mango hummingbird.
The male Antillean Mango hummingbird has green
on it’s back and head and has an iridescent green gorget. It has gray on its
abdomen.
The female Antillean Mango hummingbird is green
on her back and upper body and is grayish white underneath.
Their outer tail feathers are mostly brownish
grey or chestnut colored.
